From Bourbon to the Bench: What a Louisville CLE Taught Me About Fighting for Workplace Justice

Employment justice in Tennessee

By Anne Hunter, Founding Attorney, Hunter Law Firm

I recently had the chance to step away from the courtroom and attend the Urban Bourbon CLE in Louisville—an event that blended legal education, professional insight, and a surprisingly profound history lesson in bourbon law.

At first glance, a CLE with “bourbon” in the title might seem worlds away from the work we do every day at Hunter Employment Law. But as I listened to judges speak on legal ethics and the evolution of Tennessee’s Business Courts—and as I heard how one of America’s oldest industries shaped the law—I found myself reflecting on the very heart of our practice: holding powerful systems accountable when they fail the people within them.

That’s what employment law is really about. And that’s exactly what this CLE reinforced for me.

Business Courts and Executive Accountability

Business Courts in Davidson County, TN

One of the most enlightening sessions was led by Davidson County Chancellor Anne Martin, who walked us through the current landscape of Tennessee’s Business Court Docket. Traditionally used for high-stakes commercial disputes, these courts are now increasingly relevant to executive-level employment cases—think wrongful terminations, breaches of severance agreements, or retaliation against senior leaders who refuse to stay silent about illegal practices.

We represent those executives.

When a VP, general counsel, or department head is terminated not because of performance, but because they challenged unethical conduct or demanded equal treatment, it’s often disguised as a “business decision.” But we know better. And if the facts support it, we pursue justice with full understanding of how to navigate business court strategy.

Ethics, Trust, and High-Stakes Litigation

Another memorable moment came during a session on legal ethics. Judges described how attorneys are expected to balance strategic action with ethical boundaries—particularly in emotionally complex cases.

That hit home.

Our clients often come to us in crisis—after being harassed by a supervisor, discriminated against because of a disability or pregnancy, or pushed out of a role they worked years to earn. They’ve usually tried everything: HR reports, internal complaints, even walking away quietly. And yet, they still carry the weight of injustice.

That’s where our ethics matter most.

We don’t exaggerate claims or promise easy wins. We give clients the truth—what the law says, what the risks are, and what justice could look like. We approach every case with compassion, clarity, and trial-readiness. Because that’s what ethical litigation looks like in the real world of employment law.

“Bourbon Justice” and the Power of Legal Frameworks

Brian Haara’s talk on Bourbon Justice—how bourbon law influenced American commercial law—might have seemed like a detour. But it offered a timely reminder: laws aren’t just rules on paper. They shape power. They determine whose voice gets heard—and whose gets silenced.

That’s the very crux of what we do at Hunter Law Firm..

We represent the people who’ve been silenced—by retaliation, by workplace bias, by powerful employers who assume their size gives them immunity. From line workers denied disability accommodations to professionals pushed out after reporting harassment, our clients often feel like the system is rigged against them.

And sometimes, it is.

But the law gives us a way to challenge that system—and win.
